Have any of you heard about this story? Apparently, this 31-year-old man named John Haley of Chicago likes to go around pushing Asian fishermen into Lake Michigan in the early morning hours. He did it on July 31st and the fisherman survived. Then he did it again in the early morning of September 1st, but this particular fisherman couldn't swim, so he died.
What kind of hobby is this?
The story gets weirder. Haley is an anti-racist skinhead. I didn't even know that existed. He's part of a group called S.H.A.R.P., which stands for SkinHeads Against Racial Prejudice.
And his hobby apparently targets Asian fishermen.
How much irony can one story have?
And what kind of moronic anti-racism group shaves their heads? Why not go the whole 9 yards and wear white sheets on their heads?
My head is spinning.
Reading that made me feel like I'd just awaken from a nap and it's dark outside so I don't know what time it is or what the hell is going on.
I'm pretty confused about the whole story.
But the one thing I am not confused about is the reason they shave their heads. If they didn't do that, they wouldn't have the clever acronym. What would that make them? ARP? Not as fun as SHARP. I can't even imagine what the acronym would be if they were to wear white sheets. WSARP? Lame.
I think it would be KARP (KKK Against Racial Prejudice), which would create even more irony since this guy targets fishermen.

Thank you for taking the time to write that so eloquently. You are indeed a class act and we can all learn a lot from you. Pity that I never took the time to research the history of European skinheads. What was I thinking?

What the anonymous commenter was trying to say (albeit without any real articulation) is that the skinhead movement began in the 1960s and was actually a merging of working class white British culture and the Jamaican "rude boy" aesthetic that the immigrants were bringing to England at the time. Early reggae fans should all know of the term "skinhead reggae" which refers specifically to the music as it existed in England. Much the same as Jamaican reggae, but with a much more violent slant and bigger production.
In the 1970s, the National Front (a white supremacist organization) co-opted the subculture, which was still mostly lower-class, un-educated white males, and convinced them that their problems were all due to immigration, and that, in effect, started the movement which many people call "skinhead" today. In actuality, anti racist--or non racist--skinheads are the overwhelming majority, they just don't get in the news like the political extremists who nowadays don't even really have any connection to the subculture.
That being said, and being a skinhead from the Chicago area, Haley's a member of a gang called the Chicago Mafia Skinheads (detailed somewhat on my blog), which does have black members (actually the other skinhead that was with Hayley when he pushed the fisherman was black), but the entire outfit is frowned upon by the local skins because they're pretty much drunk idiots who don't do anything except start fights, cause trouble, and give us a worse name than we already have.
You articulated that much better than anonymous did, and I understand that the movement didn't start as racist, but the fact is, it is known as racist now. So why still use the term? Call yourselves "baldies" or something. The skinhead name is pretty much going to keep it's bad reputation despite any volunteering at homeless shelters, or bake drives for charity you do.
The majority of skinheads are not racists...however, they are the one's that make it into the media (bigotry sells, right?). For the record...Haley is not an anti-racist. He may have an African American in his crew...but blacks fought on the side of the confederacy as well (and that didn't make the South pro-black at that time did it?).
They targeted this guy because he was Asian...it was the second incident that evening and the first guy, while white, had Asian features. It was the third incident that week.
Chicago Mafia Skinheads may not be white power skinheads...but they are bigots. Did you know one of them left Johnny's house several years ago and murdered a homeless man...that CMS guy was white power. Johnny's brother has the racist skinhead band Skrewdriver tattooed on his forearm. Anti-racist my a butt.

There will always be both racist and anti-racists skinheads...you probably pass us everyday and don't notice us because we're not wearing swastikas. However, Halley ain't one of us.
Haley is not, and never was, SHARP. He only claimed SHARP because most of the world can't tell the difference between skinheads and Nazis. Even after getting a wake up call, most people have a real hard time accepting the fact that we aren't all fascists. But CMS doesn't fall into any catagory - they aren't WP, definitely not SHARP or ARA, but they ent trads either. They're pretty much drunken hooligans, and while Haley's done a lot of messed up stuff that I don't want to get into, he's not racist. He's an asshole, yeah, and a sociopath, but he's not racist.
